Oyo State governor, Engr Seyi Makinde has urged the Chairmen of local government and local community development areas (LCDAs) in Oyo State to be accountable and transparent in the discharge of their duties to the people at the grassroot level.

The State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Bayo Lawal sounded the note of warning at Ibadan on Monday while holding the inaugural meeting with the council Chiefs.

According to him, the meeting was to officially familiarize with the Caretaker Chairmen and for them to be acquainted and counselled on some issues that might deter their smooth operations at the local level, adding that the outcome of the meeting would help them have a strong grasp of the workings of the local government system.

“They should face the job squarely and ensure they use little finance given to them judiciously for the development of the grassroot while keeping in mind that you are the closest to the people of the grassroot and the State policies and programmes must be replicated in the areas of education, primary healthcare, and social infrastructures among others.”

He stressed that Ministry of Local Government and chieftaincy Matters would commence inspection to each Local Government and LCDAs in the state to monitor their activities adding that the exercise was not aimed at witch-hunt anybody but to ensure effective and judicious administration.

Lawal said the State administration has shown enough commitment that it would do whatever necessary to improve the welfare of the people living in the rural areas to make possible, a decrease in poverty level and make life meaning for all.
