Tension has heightened in the Ogbomoso zone of Oyo State following the suspension of two local government chairmen in less than 24 hours.
The Executive Chairman of Oriire Local Government, Hon. Olateju Michael Alabi, was suspended by councilors on Monday, while the Executive Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Hon Isaiah Adegbite who is serving his second term, was also suspended on Tuesday.
Both suspensions were reportedly carried out by the legislative councils of the respective local governments over allegations of financial impropriety, though details of the allegations remain sketchy as of press time.
The development has, however, sparked political debate within the zone, with observers questioning the timing and motive behind the suspensions.
A political analyst who spoke on the matter queried whether the actions were genuinely about accountability or a mere political witch-hunt, noting that the two affected chairmen are perceived not to be aligning with the Allied People’s Movement (APM).
As at the time of filing this report, efforts to get official reactions from the affected chairmen were ongoing, while stakeholders have called for calm and due process in handling the unfolding political crisis.
