The Commissioners of Power and Energy in Nigeria have convened for a pivotal two-day meeting from November 25-26, 2024, in Lagos, aimed at bolstering collaboration and capacity building among states.

The gathering focused on institutionalising a peer review mechanism to facilitate the development of sub-national electricity markets, with the ultimate goal of achieving universal access to electricity at the sub-national level.

Key stakeholders from across the power sector participated in the discussions, including representatives from the Nigeria Governor’s Forum; the Special Adviser on Energy to the President, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Notable attendees also included the acting Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Meter Asset Providers, Distribution Companies, and Generation Companies. Their contributions at the gathering enriched the discourse, highlighting the collective commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.

In his remark, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources in Oyo State, Barrister Seun Ashamu, emphasized the importance of these meetings in fostering a collaborative environment among states.

“This initiative is crucial for harnessing the potential of our sub-national markets,” Ashamu stated.

“By sharing best practices and engaging in constructive peer reviews, we can significantly improve our strategies for achieving universal electricity access.”

The commissioner further noted that, as the country sought to improve its energy landscape, the outcomes of the meeting are expected to play a vital role in shaping policies and strategies that prioritize collaboration and efficiency in the electricity sector.

He said the discussions at the forum underscored the necessity of a coordinated approach to tackle the challenges facing the power sector in Nigeria, paving the way for innovative solutions that can ensure reliable electricity supply for all citizens.
