The Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources says the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde is committed to implementing its key power project to give Oyo residents more access to electricity.

This was disclosed by the Hon Commissioner, Barrister Seun Ashamu who hosted a group of Journalists who were in his office today, 6th November, 2023 to ascertain the level of work done on the Independent Power Project, 11 MW hybrid power plant located at the State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to Barrister Ashamu, the project is being executed by Elektron Energy on a Build-Operate-Transfer model which is being supervised by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The Hon Commissioner reaffirmed the remarks of Governor Seyi Makinde at the flag-off ceremony in 2021 highlighting the benefits of the project to Oyo State residents.

“The project will provide power to government facilities within the Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan and environs.

“The state government will repay the capital expenditure investment of Elektron Energy over a ten-year period within which the energy company will operate and manage the infrastructure.

“As you are aware, the project is warehoused here at the Oyo State Secretariat, and so the state secretariat and government facilities that enjoy proximity to the secretariat will benefit.

Specifically, when completed, the 11MW hybrid power solution will power:

1) 12 healthcare facilities, including Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital and State Hospital Ring Road.

As you may know, our administration has invested heavily in world-class diagnostic and treatment equipment at these hospitals with a direct impact on about 15,622 patients annually.

2) This IPP will also power not less 10km radius of public lighting under the ‘Light-Up Oyo’ project.

“And of course, as we say, where there is light, there is security and economic development.”
