Group Affirms Alaafin’s Supreme Status Among Yoruba Kings
The Renaissance Group, a cultural association based in Ibadan, has reinforced the supreme status of the Alaafin among Yoruba kings.
Spokesperson of the group, Prince Adeniyi Adebayo, highlighted that the Alaafin occupies a distinctive and unmatched position in the hierarchy of Yoruba royalty.
“The Alaafin is not merely a figure to be observed; he stands alone,” Adebayo remarked.
He recalled historical customs where local rulers would bow their heads in deference as the Alaafin passed, greeting him with the title “Kabiyesi.”
“This illustrates the profound respect and authority that the Alaafin commands throughout the region.”
Adebayo elaborated that the concept of kingship in Yorubaland originated from the Alaafin, placing him at the pinnacle of traditional leadership.
“When discussing kingship, the Alaafin is at the top. He stands alone,” he asserted.
The spokesperson also criticised recent actions by political figures, particularly referencing an incident involving a governor who reached out to greet the late Alaafin Adeyemi.
“How could anyone dare to extend a hand to the Alaafin? Until the Kabiyesi himself offers his hand, no individual of proper lineage would stand before an Alaafin and reach out.
Such actions are unacceptable,” Adebayo emphasised, underscoring the cultural protocols that demand respect for the Alaafin.
